Description:
The Life of Pi Book Cover is a conceptual design project focused on translating narrative themes into a cohesive and visually compelling book cover system. The goal was to design both a front and back cover that functions as a professional publishing piece while communicating the emotional and thematic essence of the story.
In developing the final design, I focused on integrating typography and imagery into a unified visual system that reflects the tone of Life of Pi. A key challenge was finding a typeface that matched the emotional tone and visual direction without becoming distracting or feeling too generic. Many existing fonts either competed with the imagery or felt visually “shelved away", lacking the sensitivity needed for the composition. Because of this, I chose to draw custom typography, tailoring the letterforms so the type functioned as an extension of the illustration.
This project was refined through research, sketching, and iterative experimentation to explore different interpretations of the narrative. This process allowed me to test how symbolism, imagery, and typography could work together to express the book’s core themes in a unique and meaningful way.
